Preston is the name for a neighborhood that surrounds the Prestonwood Country Club in Cary. It is centrally located in the heart of the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill community, about 10 miles from North Carolina State University, 11 miles from Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and 15 miles from the main campus of the University of North Carolina and 22 miles from Duke University.
The Preston community features many shopping centers as well as easy access to major shopping malls like Crabtree Valley Mall, Cary Town Centre and the Streets at Southpoint.
The area features an active home owners association, http://www.prestonhoa.com/, encompassing a number of the smaller neighborhoods around Preston include: Arbor, Bluffs, Chase, Courtyards, Crabtree Crossing Estates, Crossings, Deerwood Apartments, Estates, Fairwoods, Forest, Grande, Grande II, Grande Villas, Hamptons, Highlands Ridge, Kelton Square, Lakestone, Links, Meadows, Meadow view, Oaks, Peninsula, Petra, Plantation, Ponds, Trails, Villas, Vistas, Woods and Wynds.
From the Homeowners Association: The Preston community is an original development started in 1987 by Murray Savings & Loan, dba Prestonwood, a Texas Corporation.
Development Company took over development in November 1991. At that time the sales office was located at 109 Summer Lake Drive - the only house on the cul-de-sac, built for a sales office to later be converted to a private residence. At that time 8 neighborhoods were developed and selling houses. They were: Fairways, Falls Villas, Highlands, Ponds, Point, Trace, Greens and Pines. These neighborhoods consisted of 421 lots. At that time there were 18 holes of golf, the Prestonwood County Club and a pool/tennis facility.
Since 1991 Preston has grown to include 1625 homes encompassing approximately 1950 acres of land. Other luxuries added to the community include 2 additional 18-hole golf courses, a new pro shop, new fitness and swim center, new tennis facilities, new maintenance area and replacement of split rail fencing around the course to the current brick and metal fencing.

From the Club: Prestonwood Country Club provides its members and guests with three terrific eighteen holes courses. These very scenic courses are well manicured. The Meadows Course was built on flat terrain and is easy to walk. The fairways are narrow, and the greens are fast and undulating. The Highlands Course features many elevation changes, and its fairways afford generous landing areas. Water hazards (lakes, creeks, streams, and ponds) come into play on all three courses.
